Safety devices designed to extinguish initial small fires. Made of fire-resistant fabric that can smother fires and protect people from flames. Essential for kitchens, laboratories, and industrial facilities.

Fire Blanket

What is a Fire Blanket?

A fire blanket consists of a piece of fire-resistant fabric, usually made of woven glass fiber, that can be used to wrap around a person whose clothing is alight or to smother a small fire.

Fire blankets are safety devices designed to extinguish initial small fires. They consist of a sheet of fire-resistant or retardant material. Fire blankets used in kitchens and homes are usually made of fiberglass and Kevlar in some cases, folded into a quick-release contraption for easy storage.

High Temperature Resistance

These nonflammable blankets are helpful in smothering fires by cutting off oxygen supply at temperatures up to 900 degrees. They can be used by anyone, even those with no fire protection experience.

How Fire Blankets Work

The Fire Triangle Principle

For every fire to start burning, all three elements of the fire triangle must be present: heat, fuel, and oxygen. The fire blanket works by cutting off the oxygen supply to the fire, thereby extinguishing it.

Operation Mechanism:

  • Fire blanket must be sealed closely to a solid surface around the fire
  • Two pull-down tails allow quick deployment from storage bag
  • Top lip folds back over hands for heat protection
  • Prevents direct contact burns while handling

How to Use a Fire Blanket Correctly

Using a fire blanket correctly is one of the safest ways to extinguish a flammable liquid burning in a container – for example, oil or fat burning in a saucepan.

1

Hang in Accessible Location

Fire blanket should be hung in or close to the kitchen. Must be quickly accessible when fire breaks out. Many hang it on kitchen closet door - out of sight but easy to access.

2

Pull Black Drawstrings

When a small fire starts, pull the two black drawstrings that hang from the bottom. The blanket will fall down from its red bag.

3

Hold as Shield

Take hold of the blanket's upper corners and hold at chest height between you and the fire. Keep it spread out to utilize the entire surface area.

4

Gently Cover Fire

Drop the blanket over the fire carefully while keeping it between you and flames. Attempt to completely encircle the fire to smother it.

5

Leave Blanket in Place

Leave the blanket on the fire for several minutes. Pulling back too soon allows oxygen access which will cause fire to flare up again.

6

Turn Off Power Supply

Once blanket is placed, quickly turn off any power supplies near the fire source to prevent spread of electrical fires.

7

Avoid Water

Water can splatter combustible oils everywhere. Fire blanket or kitchen-rated fire extinguisher is a better option than water.

8

Assess Situation

If fire blanket is not appropriate, use fire extinguisher. If you cannot control the fire, evacuate and contact fire department.
